Corrosion happens when a metal surface come into contact with electrolytes (i.e. metal in seawater) which causes the metal to disintegrate and its structure to grow weak. That's why it's very important to ensure that these metals will last long as they can by using cathode protection. Adding a sacrificial anode would prevent the iron metal from corroding. It's created from a metal alloy with a more negative electrothermal potential than the other metal it will be used to protect. Basically, the sacrificial anode will be consumed in place of the metal it's protecting so it needs to be replaced regularly. So if you need one to protect your boat hull, look no further. Note: The anodes in sacrificial anode cathodic protection systems must be periodically inspected and replaced when consumed. For steel structures, anodes of aluminium, zinc or magnesium are mostly preferred and for copper and its alloys its suggested to use iron anodes.
